Hi, I’m Cara, a cheerful and empathetic communicator fascinated with the ways people and places interact.

I’m a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, with a background in communication and expertise in urban studies. I’ve worked mainly for mission-driven organizations, particularly nonprofits of various sizes (from small, volunteer-led organizations to large institutions), and I excel at creating nonprofit communications materials tailored to an organization’s audience and budget. I have over 15 years of experience helping organizations tell their stories and share their research.

In addition to nonprofit communications, I specialize in academic book editing. Before launching my freelance business, I worked for eight years as a book editor and publications manager for the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Urban Research and for two years as the institute’s communications director.

Before becoming a publications and communications expert, I earned a Master of Urban Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. I spent several years as a city and regional planner, working at Regional Plan Association to build green networks in the country’s biggest metropolis and at Laramie Main Street Alliance to preserve the built environment in the country’s most rural state. I’m currently working toward earning a Graduate Certificate in Real Estate Development from Portland State University.

When I’m not working, you can find me at home in Portland, Oregon, hosting dinner parties, hiking trails, or scrolling petfinder looking for my new best friend.
